Volodymyr Lytvyn: There should be a Powerful Opposition in Ukraine

There should be a strong opposition in Ukraine. The Head of the Ukrainian Parliament made this statement, meeting the journalists in Novohrad-Volynskyi on Tuesday.

Asked about the prospects of this political power, V. Lytvyn called for a strong opposition in Ukraine.  It is traditional in our state that "a great number of politicians will join the opposition on the eve of elections, as it is believed that it is easier to win the elections with oppositional powers."

"If there is no opposition in Ukraine, we will face political sluggishness", the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine emphasised. He advised oppositional leaders to submit more legislative initiatives. The Head of the Parliament stated that opposition used to criticize the draft State Budget 2011 heavily, though they failed to draft their own document.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine suggested concluding a pact between the opposition and the authorities for several years. He considers it inadmissible for some opposition representatives to address the international community with a request to impose sanctions upon Ukraine. "It will do more harm than good, for ordinary public first of all", V. Lytvyn stressed.

The Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament emphasised that he had no right to evaluate the actions taken against the ex-governmental officials and opposition representatives, since he had not been familiar with the case materials. "Though, it is obvious that under the present conditions these cases would have some political implications", he added. V. Lytvyn believes that there should be "an ultimate transparence" concerning these issues.
